Couldn't agree with you more. Was one of my favourite films growing up, I think I've watched it about 267 times! But just watching it again now, the ending really annoys me. Everything you've said is spot on in my opinion.

I moved to Bed-Stuy with a neutral yet optimistic sense of living. I was open and willing to love my new neighborhood. The point at which that attitude turned is when the the "people who have been living here for generations" start yelling, harassing, and being openly hostile for no reason other than the color of my skin and my adorable neon tote bag. I don't understand the thought behind "Get the fuck out" vs. a simple "Welcome". If more people in this world were welcoming rather than hostile, this world would be on a different track. I fight turning racist within myself every day due to ridiculous encounters with people in the community with their OWN "bizarre sense of entitlement". Who is right? No one. So why can't we all welcome each other.

It gets so tiring.

lets focus on the real problem population here:

bedbugs

given the choice between stick-up kids on the street and bedbugs at the crib...sh*t, i'll drink in my home at night if i have to.

can't we all just turn on the bedbugs?

I'm not sure if you lived here after 9/11 or The Blackout in '03, but there was a brief time everywhere around NYC that people of all sorts of ethnicities and backgrounds bonded together and were, if only for moments, one unit. One neighborhood, so to speak.

Since moving here, I have encountered such racism, prejudice and bias. I even have my own racist and prejudiced thoughts since moving here. Thanks, NYC!

I have also encountered community, greater appreciation for humanity, and summer Fridays. I suppose its a good ying-yang, but the bad stuff makes me crazy, even though you have to take it to get the good.

I just moved away Bed-Stuy a month ago. I found it to be a mostly horrible experience. Mostly because of my bad landlord (he took us to court, we won) and the severe lack of anything to do at night within walking distance. Also, I am tired of being harassed by groups of bratty kids yelling "hey faggot". You can't change a neighborhood that doesn't want to be changed.

I really enjoyed stumbling upon your blog. I lived in Bed-Stuy on Bedford and Willoughby for almost a year. I didn't make it through the full lease because my crazy landlord sued me! We won and he got thrown out of court! I was initially lured into the lore of living in Bed-Stuy by it's close walk to my work, but nothing is worth it to live here anymore.

I'm subletting with some hipsters in Williamsburg until I find a new place of my own...if there even is such a thing!

If you wanna read about my lame Bed-Stuy experience, feel free to visit the following links!

or my lame apartment search after the fact...

I came to your website following a link from the NY Times. I'm sure you'll get a lot of these. I don't know if you hang out on your stoop, meet people, and talk to them -- or if you're the kind of person who only sleeps in Bed-Stuy but works, parties, and socializes elsewhere. I think when there are race and class differences, as are indicated but not explicitly mentioned in your story, the most important thing for the newcomer to do is to hang out and meet people. I live in Crown Heights, and I'm black but not Caribbean. And I'm an overeducated, PhD-getting type. But the more I hang out and meet people, the less likely I am to take one slight as indicative of the whole neighborhood. As far as I can tell, longtime residents really treat the street, the common area, as home while gentrifiers treat their apartments like a hotel room or a fortress. Just my thoughts, but I strongly recommend hanging out on your stoop, stopping to talk to others on their stoops. It makes telling the friendly people from the jerks easier, and it makes everyone feel at home.

As a Black woman who's lived in Fort Greene, Newark and Bedford-Stuyvesant (in that order) for the past 10 years, I am perplexed, vexed and amused at how people -- most (often) white people accustomed to living in Manhattan -- move to the 'hood and have (often) absurd expectations for their day-to-day living experiences. I, too, hope for adequate and reasonable amentities in my neighborhood of residence, but I sure as heck don't come to Bed-Stuy expecting it to be a carbon copy of the East Village or Williamsburg or Morningside Heights. DO. YOUR. HOMEWORK. FIRST. Everybody doesn't pray and live for Starbucksfication. Please believe.

Huh? So, HIS creating crimes because he lives there? Since he's not more vigilant, it's HIS fault for getting mugged instead blaming on the muggers since NO ONE should be getting mugged anywhere? I hope I'm reading this wrong but this sound weird...
